Opening Hunt Was “Good Show”

The opening hunt of the season for the Rangitaiki Ward, Opotiki Hunt Club was voted a thoroughly “good show” by everyone who rode the Taneatua course on Saturday or watched the fun from vantage points along the way. Though the morning’s heavy rain made a rather gloomy prospect, by midday the sun was out and, if the ground was a bit greasy in places, it made for. good soft landings. Actually, apart from one or two minor spills, there were no mishaps at all. Hounds got on the scent a couple of times, but the hare had things pretty much his own way all through. “Anyway,” some heretic was heard to gurgle into his tankard afterwards,' “the hare’s a re- 6 latively unimportant detail. It’s the fun that matters. And ,we had plenty.” Lavish catering, attractively served by women volunteers who knew just how, made the breakfast which preceded the hunt a meal to be remembered. The toast list follows: “The King”; “Visitors”, Mr C. McCracken, Mr Clem Black; “Landowners”, Mr L. Looney, Messrs W. C. Davis and L. Richardson; “Ladies” Mr Rex Bartlett, Dr Ada Blomfield; “Kindred Sports”, Mr Bob Black, Mr W. Sullivan; “Deputy Master and Mrs Fogerty”, Mr Clem Black, Mr G. Fogerty.
