MRS M. A. KINGSLEY-SMITH
The death occurred recently of a widely-known and respected resident of Whakatane (and latterly Ohope), Mrs Mary Annie Smith. A® Mrs Kingsley-Smith, who was 66 V , years old was born at Auckland, -■ being the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs E. L. Heighway of Mount Eden. She entered the teaching profession and taught at numerous schools before being married.
In later life she was a wellknown elocutionist and entertainer in Auckland, and took part in many amateur theatricals. She was a member of the Auckland * Penwomen’s Club for some years and as a social worker was the popular secretary of the Community Sunshine League. Later she became the sec-retary-organiser of the Auckland S.P.C.A., and figured as a tireless worker in all that organisation’s activities. ' ■
Coming to Whakatane ten years ago, she joined the staff of the Bay of Plenty Beacon; but retired from that position owing to ill-health. Known for her bright personality and ready sympathy she made a host of friends in town and country. She will be missed by a wide circle in these parts. She leaves two sons, Messrs Clive and Eric Kingsley-Smith of Whakatane and Hukerenui respectively. There are seven grandchildren.
, MRS JANET GLEN With the death of Mrs Janet Glen, Te* Teko, at the age of 81 last week a well known identity disappeared from the district. Quiet and unassuming, liked and known by many people Mrs Glen died just when preparations were being made to celebrate her diamond wedding anniversary.
Born in Ardrossan, in the county of Ayrshire, in Scotland in 1868 Mrs Glen, in her long life, witnessed many changes in the world: She came from a dairy farming family so that when she came to New Zealand in 1921 the life was not new to her. In Scotland she met her husband Mr William Glen, / who came to this country just before the outbreak of the Great War, in 1913.
Coming to Whakatane Mr and Mrs Glen settled in the town for some years .but later moved out to Poroporo and took over a store there. Mrs Glen helped with the management of the business but later they moved to Te Teko, where they have resided ever sine. Mrs Glen took a keen interest in farming and gardening and was also a lover of croquet. She is survived by her husband; one son, Mr R.'Glen, Te Teko, and two daughters, Mrs M. Craig, Te Teko, and Mrs E. Terry, Te Aviamutu.
ME C. W. PARTRIDGE The late Mr Charles William Partridge, of 22 Belmont Terrace, Remuera,. who died on March- 30 this year was an old identity of Whakatane, where he farmed at Awakeri for 17 years. He was a Past Grand of the Loyal Whakatane Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F., and was one of . the founders of that Lodge. * He J will be remembered by a greav many for the work he has done in / connection with the Lodge. He is survived by his wife and daughters.
