MORE EQUIPMENT & BIRDS ABOUT FOR SHOOTING SEASON

With just over a week to go before the shooting season opens on May 14 guns, ammunition, dogs and all the other hunting necessities are now in the process of being prepared. With more and better ammunition available this year, less birds than in the last few seasons will escape the gun. Other equipment, although not available in very large amounts, can be obtained fairly easily. With a steady demand during the past few weeks increasing daily, dealers of sports equipment at Whakatane have had to send away for more supplies in some lines. Ammunition has been snapped up, and one retailer has been completely cleaned out of all his early stocks. He has had to send away for more. The story is practically the same from other stores. Guns Expensive

Guns have bedn very scarce and those that have been put up for sale have sold without difficulty. The drawback today, according to one gun dealer, is the price. In most cases they are beyond the reach of the ordinary person as a reasonably good gun costs about £SO. However, there is a possibility that prices may drop later. Available earlier this year, licenses have been steadily drawn on and the usual last minute rush is expected during the coming week. Reports so far received concerning the game available indicate that there are more birds about this

year. Lack of ammunition and equipment during the few years since the war has possibly accounted for this.

Some lagoons near land used often by the public seem well stocked with comparatively tame birds. But lakes in the back country have very wild birds, according to one hunter. He said he thought the reason for this was that some people were shooting all the year round in these areas as it was very difficult to be detected. As a result birds had become very wary of man. With the amount of equipment and game about present indications are that this coming shoo'ting season is going to be one of the best for shooters in the Bay of Plenty for some years.
