STUDIOS WANTED FOR BROADCASTING FROM WHAKATANE

The possibility of broadcasting studios being constructed at Whakatane to link up with the new Bay of Plenty radio station was discussed by last week’s general meeting of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce. ‘

“Some action is needed'- on . our part to - see if we can obtain studios,” the president, Mr R. T. Morpeth, declared. He knew Tauranga was to .have studios and. if there was any chance of such facilities being placed at Whakatane, he thought it would be a valuable asset to the town and district.

News From Whakatane Mr Morpeth said he had been approached by broadcasting authorities. to make some arrangements for Whakatane news to be sent through to IYZ. He had written to the station but had so far not received any reply. He could not do anything concrete until he knew what was actually wanted. Referring to the possibility of studios at Whakatane, Mr F. Abbott said he thought the Chamber should write to the Director of Broadcasting, asking if there was any truth in press reports that there may be studios placed in the town. A suggestion that the Chamber should visit station IYZ was made by Mr G. Kemp. From his knowledge he said he did not think much was required for just studios.

Should Visit IYZ Mr B. Butler agreed and said he thought a call should be made on the station manager to see in what way the Chamber could be of assistance to the station from the Whakatane area.

Other speakers agreed and it was decided to inquire from the Director of Broadcasting what possibilities there were of having studios- at Whakatane.

To find what IYZ required from the Whakatane area a decision was reached that some members of the Chamber would pay a visit to the station manager.
