Book Review

“Cargo for Crooks,” by Sea Lion, a recent acquisition to the Whakatane Public Library, is a tale full of action centred round the postwar Reserve Fleet of the R.N. The author’s knowledge' of naval affairs and technicalities is obviously obtained at first hand.

The hero, Commander John Prentice, R.N. visits his best friend, Peter Browning, Officer Commanding one of the Reserve ships, and finds him stabbed. Peter’s lovely widow Tania, and John set out to solve the mystery of his death, and become involved with black marketeers and the usual “Master-mind in the background.” The suspense is kept up to the end, when vice is vanquished, and the reader is left with the tender hint of a future romance.

The tale strains the credulity at times, but is a readable thriller.
