No Concrete Footpaths An application to use cemgnt for concrete footpaths at Taneatua has been refused the Whakatane County Council by the District Building Controller, Hamilton. Cement is prohibited for this purpose. The controller suggested in his reply that the council might use some other form of surfacing such , as bitumen or tar sealing.

New Province Supported Support for a suggestion advanced by,a meeting of local bodies at Hamilton recently to form a separate provincial district in the Waikato is to be supported by the Whakatane County Council, it was decided at the monthly meeting. The proposed new province would include counties south of the northern boundaries of the Raglan and Waikato Counties within the Auckland Province, excluding those in the Gisborne District.

Mishap Considerable amusement was caused a number of people walking the banks of the fiver at Whakatane early Sunday evening by the antics of three youths in a canoe. Carefully attempting to cross the river the three had almost reached the bank opposite the rowing shed when some unknown hand overturned the boat. With loud shouts the youths toppled into the “drink” which, although cold, was only waist deep. They managed to right the canoe to the encouraging remarks of a small crowd, which had collected on the town bank. The return journey was made very carefully and full use was made of the current.
