Taneatua Guides Stall A very successful stall in aid of Girl Guide funds was held in Taneatua on Saturday. The stall was well stocked and well patronised, the pror" ceeds amounting to £l7 15s 9d. I Card Evening The Edgecumbe Parent-Teacher Association held its usual fortnightly card evening recently. In spite of heavy rain showers. there was a good attendance. Mrs Blake and Mr Ewen were the prize winners. Mr Cole won the special prize. Progress At Qhope Satisfaction with the progress being made for a new school and hall at Ohope was expressed by the chairman, Mr F. Cutler, at the annual meeting of the Ohope Progress League. He also referred to other amenities the League had been successful in obtaining at the beach. Officers elected: Chairman, Mr F. Cutler, secretary, Mr G. Mahy.
Fire Board Expenditure The estimated expenditure for the past year was £960, the chairman, Mr S. S. Shapley, stated in his report presented to the annual meeting of the Whakatane Fire Board. He revealed that the amounts contributed by the three interested bodies was, Government £SO, Insurance Companies £455, and Whakatane Borough Council £455.
Grocery Store Entered Some time before the theatre programme closed on Saturday night a thief or thieves entered Ramson and Rae’s store on the corner of Commerce Street and Merritt Street, Whakatane, and stole a quantity of cigarettes. Picture patrons walking home noticed glass fragments from a broken side window on the pavement and informed the Police, who found the front part of the shop had been entered. Investigations are proceeding. Y.F.C. Debate At Whakatane
Tonight the public of Whakatane will have the opportunity to see and hear a debating competition between Wainui and Otakiri Young Farmers’ Clubs in the Parish Hall. An interesting but controversial subject, “that the penalties for the more serious crimes in New Zealand should be increased,” has been selected. The two teams are the finalists in the Eastern Bay of Plenty and the winners of this contest are to meet the winners of the Western Bay of Plenty.
Theft Charge Dismissed $ Mrs D. C. Petty and Mr C. H. Christensen, J’s.P., yesterday dismissed a charge of theft against Hauraki Akutaha Brown, who was charged with stealing a stove, a tank and a copper valued at £l7 from the Lands and Survey Department at Edgecumbe last August. The missing articles were installed in a whare built for Brown and his brother when they worked on Awaroa Station (since sold to the Department) at the request of the brother, who said he understood they were to be charged to him. After the sale went through last June A. H. Brown occupied the whare from time to time and, in August, took away the stove, tank and copper on a truck. The Bench decided a prima*,, facie case of theft had not been established.
