Telephones On Way To Galatea
Galatea residents at last feel that civilisation is finding them. A few weeks ago they were canvassed by the P. and T. Department with a view to having the telephone installed, and now the poles are starting to be erected over at Murupara. The telephone has for so long been dangled in front of them like the carrot in front of the donkey’s nose that Galateans long ago began to take any mention of the coming of the telephone with a very big pinch of salt. However, it really and truly is on the way and, even if it is only the £1 that every one parted with so cheerfully that’ makes it seem real, at least everyone is getting their £l’s worth of pleasure by just talking about it. A new exchange is also to be erected at Murupara, which will be connected to Whakatane by the Te Teko exchange instead of the long way round through Rotorua as at present.
