NIGHT POWER CUTS AT WHAKATANE TO START NEXT WEEK

r Midnight power cuts are to be ! started at Whakatane im- N | mediately after Easter. If there I is not a big saving in the dis-

trict within the next few weeks J more drastic cuts will have to be enforced, the borough elec- | trical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, \ told the Beacon yesterday. The probable hours decided upon -are from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. each jnight except Thursday when there will be no cuts as the bakers work ■all night baking bread for the weekend. On Saturday night th,e cut will 'foe earlier, commencing at 10.30 p.m. and continuing until 3 a.m. Sunday. Disconnection Possible Should these cuts fail to lower the consumption of power, Mr Lysaght said. there would be no hesitation in disconnecting. The Board had foeen warned by the Electricity Con--troller that savings must be made .and made soon.

Although there had been a very slight saving since voluntary rationing had been asked of consumers at Whakatane, Mr Lysaght said it was •so feeble as ’to be almost of no use. It was quite obvious by meter figures that very few people had worried about the scheme. Now, there Was not going to be any choice, all consumers would have to pay together in saving.

Probably some of the biggest offenders and users of electricity in the town were the different businesses. Few appeared to be wprrying about saving, Mr Lysaght added. They were escaping in the early but unless there was a saving in daytime consumption severe cuts would be enforced at different times during the day. Quota Rationing

Mr Lysaght said he thought that •quota rationing was the fairest means of saving power. An offender ■on such a scheme was liable to total disconnection. It was only a shortage of staff that was stopping its introduction at Whakatane now although it was on the way. Cuts were to have been imposed this week but because of the Easter 'holidays it was decided to hold them over until next week.
