GYMKHANA AT AWAKERI DRAWS LARGE CROWD

Organisers of Saturday gymkhana at Awakeri have every reason to be completely satisfied with the result. Though a bit dubious early in the day the weather settled to perfection, and Luxton’s paddock carried a crowd well worthy of the excellent day’s sport provided. A team of highly efficient officials pushed through a big programme with smoothness and dispatch.

Entries for the horse events were exceptionally good, including some outstanding jumpers. K. Sisam scooped the pool, taking first awards in the maiden, hunters’ and open jumping competitions. Members of the Whakatane Amateur Othletic Club turned out for their last competitive runs this season, putting on a show that leaves no doubt that the revival of the Club has been well worth while. Outstanding performance of the day was G, Powley’s grand finishing burst in the 880yds to beat N.Z. title contender Ray Dawson on the tape. Dawson was giving Powley 28yds. That finish was a fair example of the handicapper’s accurate estimates of the runners’ capabilities. Side shows, stalls and selections by the Whakatane Boys’ Band added the finishing touches to the general carnival air. Results:—
