PARENT-TEACHER ASSN. REVIEWS A YEAR’S WORK
“Members of the Executive arel* pleased to report a considerable in- V crease in membership, which gain- Ik ed the figure of 134. We also feel that the past year has been very successful not only financially but by reason that keen interest has been shown by members and we have had some very interesting and instructive programmes at the monthly meetings,” said the third annual report of the Whakatane Parent-Teacher Association, presented to Monday night’s meeting, i “Eight meetings were held dur/. ing the year, with an average attendance of 45. At the annual meeting in April, Mr G. S. Russell, President of the South Auckland Federation of Parent-Teacher Associations, was guest speaker, and other guest speakers have been: Rev. R. s T. Dodds, in August, “Palestine”, Mr J. G. Espie, Principal Dental Officer of the South Auckland Health District from Hamilton, in October, Messrs N. H. E. Hockin, C. L. Hudson and F. R. Coombes, in December, - “Choosing a Career.” Film evenings were held in June, July, September '-and November. ■ Feature of the meetings this year were displays arranged by the 'Leachers and items by High School pupils: Hospital School Handwork, High School Art, Primary School Needlework and Art, Xmas Parcels for Portsea School in England. At the August meeting there was a Book Display, including a loan collection from the National Library. “During the year the Association again offered support in approaching the Borough Council "for the in-' auguration of the Country Library Service in Whakatane. Pupils' have books from the Country Library Service at school and the Association would like them to have the , opportunity of continuing their reading after leaving school. “In April, executive members gave assistance in the formation of . a Parent-Teacher Association at Awakeri, and one visit was made to Edgecumbe Parent-Teacher Association, and we have been pleased to have their members at our meetings. I
“The Association arranged the catering for visiting teams : for the Bay of Plenty Primary School Rep. Basketball Tournament, staffed the canteen at the Primary School Sports, and assisted at the School Fete. Sixteen weekly card evenings were run, showing a profit of £26. Thanks are due to the business people of the town for donating many of the prizes. Several items have been provided for the kitchen; a spool and portable screen for the school '’projector, and £5 given to the School Fund for postages on films.
“The Association appreciates very much having the use of the projector for its meetings. We are also indebted to the teachers for the preparation of displays and for assisting the executive in many ways throughout the year. One feature which we consider really worthwhile is the contact maintained be- i tween parents and teachers which / is made possible through the activi- A ties of the Parent-Teacher Associa- ~ tion, and we look forward to another successful year together.”
