New Bay Of Plenty Station Will Have Latest Equipment
All the latest developments in transmitting equipment to give a high standard of tone and reception have been incorporated in the new Bay of Plenty Broadcasting Station, IYZ Rotorua, which is to be opened on April 27, the district engineer at IYA, Mr J. H. Gault said last week. Station IYZ will be the first broadcasting station in New Zealand to be equipped with air-cooled valves. This development superseded wat-er-cooled valves said Mr Gault. The older types were more likely to cause trouble and breakdowns in transmission. The 10-kilowatt transmitter at IYZ will be as powerful as lYA’s. Under suitable conditions Auckland listeners will be able to receive IYZ, but the station is not intended to be an alternative station for Auckland.
The district engineer said that Rotorua and the surrounding country was a notoriously bad place for radio reception. Sulphur and steam corroding power lines and aerials, made the general noise level high. IYZ would be the answer to that. The programme will be similar to those of other YZ stations, and it will be broadcast for over 15 hours a day from the studio in Rotorua. Occasionally broadcasts will be made from Tauranga. When IYZ goes on the air on Wednesday, April 27, the ' station manager will be Mr K. G. Collins. He will have with him four .announcers, four technicians at the studio, and four at the transmitting station at Paengaroa.
