Rowing

WHAKATANE CLOSING DAY ON SATURDAY A race by veteran rowers of the club and anyone else who desires to take part is planned by the Whakatane Rowing Club for its closing day on Saturday. The programme will naturally centre on rowing, but some surprises await the general public, who are invited to attend when things really move at 1.30. A yankee tournament is to be held among crews during the day and apart from the steeplechase by the veterans the other big event will be a handicap race between four of the club’s top crews. Preliminary races will be rowed in the morning and the club photo is to be taken then also.

Good Season While the past season has not been successful from the competition point of view it has been one of the best in getting the club back on its feet again. Attending most of the regattas Whakatane has competed with credit and many of the young rowers have gained valuable experience in the sport. Next season the club should be to the fore in the coming regattas. Looking ahead it would appear that Whakatane has a good year in front of it.

Final Trial Fours On Saturday the final trial fours of the season were held and al though there were only four crews competition was keen. Results:—

First heat: P. Armstrong, S. Shapley, W. Stuart, D. Wells, R. Reid beat M. Whittaker, E. Hunt, G. Drayson, T. Stewart, P. Lynds bv one length. Second heat: G. Moore, R. King, P. Bowering, T. Stewart, T. Reid beat M. Whittaker, L. Stewart, D. Baker, L. Goodall, P. Lynds by -f length. Final: P. Armstrong’s crew beat G. Moore’s crew by J length. ,
