WHAKATANE CLUB’S OPENING DAY Ideal weather prevailed on Saturday when a very large number cf members and visiting players were present for the opening of the season of the Whakatane Golf Club. In declaring the season open, Mr B. S. Barry, the president, said that the course was in an excellent state due to the favourable weather conditions experienced during the summer and the good work of Mr Benson, the greenkeeper, who had worked long hours in preparation for the opening day. He referred to the proposed new clubhouse for which detailed plans and specifications were now in the course of preparation and when completed a building permit would be applied for. In concluding, Mr. Barry extended a warm welcome to the visitors and said he was very pleased to see such

a large gathering of members and wished them a pleasant and successful season.

The opening event took the form of a Canadian Mixed Foursome, the first match comprising B. S. Barry and Mrs Barry and L. Roach and Mrs Roach.

The competition was won by C. M. Hyland and Mrs G. Otley, whose gross score of 80, less handicap of 11, net 69, was a particuarly fine effort. Other good cards were returned by N. Hockin and Mrs Winstone 82—11—71 and M. Bell and Mrs Corcoran 89—17—72. The officers of the Club are: President, Mr B. S. Barry; vice-presi-dents, Messrs N. H. E. Hockin and W. S’. Henderson; captain, Mr B. M. Alexander; vice-captain, Mr C. W. Woodham; committee, Mesdames Combes and Dawson, Messrs L. W. Luxton, F. R. Combes, T. W. Burke and W. D. Steel; secretary and treasurer, Brigadier A. E. Conway.
