Civilised Natives Beat Their Wives

Civilisation has overtaken the Kuanyama Ambo tribes of SouthWest Africa who have started beating their wives, instead of burying them alive. Dr. Edwin C. Loeb, of the University of California’s expedition to Africa, reports this after studying the tribe of 60,000. Penned in by a jungle >on the north and deserts on the other three sides, they raise cattle on a grassy plain. The tribe has 50 per cent more women than men. Men buy women with cattle. A man seldom has enough cattle to buy several wives and become a headman until he is 35. The wives do all the work. Besides the new and enlightened method of beating, a headman can discipline an erring wife by demoting her. In a household of 30 wives, the effect of loss of seniority can be terrific, Dr. Loeb adds.
