Variety Of Screen Entertainment For Whakatane Fans
Variety 'of film fare is before fans at Whakatane during the comnng week. From the heights of an alpine glacier to dank streets of London and then across the Atlantic to a time of just under 100 years ago “when the West was wild.” That is where local film audiences will have the chance of being in next week’s pictures. In their own class the films are good and entertainment is available for most tastes. “BROKEN JOURNEY” This is a particularly good picture of Marguerite Gaylord Tate’s book “Marooned in the Clouds” produced in British studios. It concerns 13 very different people in a Dakota that crashes in the Alps in 1946, and describes the way they act individually when forced to live together. It has a strong cast headed by Phyllis Calvert and the fat man, Francis L. Sullivan. “WATERLOO BRIDGE” This is a return screening of a film that has been' very popular since its first release before the war. Set in 1917, it is the story of a ballet dancer who takes to the streets to live after she learns her sweetheart has been reported killed in France. However, he returns later and wants to marry her, but she realises it is impossible. Vivien Leigh takes the part of the ballet dancer, Myra, and Robert Taylor acts Roy Cronin, her sweetheart. It is a strong but gentle romance and for those who like such films it is certain to raise the tears. “THE MAN FROM COLORADO” • “A spectacular film in flaming technicolour,” is how the advertisements describe it. Of its type this picture is very good and followers of wild westerns who like plenty of excitement, shooting and beautiful women will not be disappointed. The story is not very strong. Two friends in love with the same girl, she gets engaged to one, he becomes federal judge. His best friend is made marshall. Outlaws appear, and the judge is found to be urging them, on. Marshall falls out with him but the judge gets away and at -the crucial moment perishes. The marshall then gets the girl. Fair entertainment ably carried off by the main character*;, Glenn Ford, William Holden and Ellen Drew.
