L. F. SMART NEW JUNIOR CHAMPION
A large number of games were played by the Whakatane Bowling Club at the greens on Saturday. The Junior Champion was decided when L. F. Smart carried off the title and two challenges for the Walter Smith Buttons and the R. F. Smith Stars were successful. Results:—
Junior Championship; Playing steady bowls, Smart continued his success of the previous Saturday (in reaching the final stages with two lives) by defeating his one lifer opponent, J. Graham, * 20—14,. thus winning the C. W. Good Cup and Miniature. %
Walter Smith Buttons: In a challenge match for the Buttons the holders, C. Butler and W. Howat Jnr. defeated the challengers P. Breckon and D. Butler by 24 to 14. R. F. Smith Stars: The holders of the Stars were defeated in a closelycontested game by T. Atkinson, R. Stewart, A. Carling, R. Spong (s) 18 R. Wilson, P. Sims, J. W. Wilson, L. Luxton (s) 16. Pairs Championship: Rounds one and two, Coates and Copestake defeated Latta and White; King and Good defeated Duley and Oswald; Henderson and McKenzie defeated Berg and Butler: Stewart and Spong defeated Weeber and Campbell. Round 3, Sims and Luxton defeated Shapley and Bell; Merito and Burgess defeated Stewart and Spong; Grant and Anderson defeated Cockerell and Butler; Pearson and Smoljan defeated McKenzie and Henderson; Thompson and McCarthy defeated Mclsaac and Hayward; Howat and Howat defeated Berg and Butler; Littlejohn and Morpeth defeated Weeber and Campbell; King and Good defeated Coates and Copestake.
The fourth round will be played on April 9 commencing at 3 a.m.

OHOPE’S FINAL PICNIC TOURNAMENT The Ohope Bowling Club’s final picnic tournament of the season was played over the week-end. Although the weather was cold, and the wind very gusty at intervals, a very enjoyable day was spent by the 56 players taking part. There was a big muster from the Whakatane Club. No less than twelve teams came forward, many of them tiying out their form for the big Faster tournament at Whakatane.
Players spoke very highly of the playing surface provided by Mr A. Millar. Section results:— »
Section A: Smoljan 4£ games, Good 2, Sloane, Spong 2£, McKenzie 3, Hayward 2, Berg 2. Section B: Harris 2| games, Rixon 4, Rivett 2, McCarthy 1, Murphy 2. Carling 4, Birrell 3. Smoljan won A section outright With 4-! games. In the play-off for the winner of Section B between Rixon (Ohope) and Carling (Whakatane) both with 4 wins, Carling defeated the Ohopeteam 4—2. Rixon’s team, which consisted of three first-year players had played very fine bowls to reach, semi-final honours.
