Bay Of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 1949

Local & General

Borrowed a Boat Because of transport difficuulties the Whakatane Rowing Club could not take boats to the Ngaruawahia river regatta on Saturday. However, this was overcome by the Tauranga club, who lent the Whakatane crews one of their boats. Licences In The County Eight new heavy traffic licences and 26 drivers’ licences were issued during February and early March, the inspector, Mr A. Carling, reported to the Whakatane County Council yesterday. Dogs registered numbered 304, a total registered to the council of 510. Galatea Deviation Completed The formation and metalling of the deviation on the Te Teko-Gala-tea road has now been completed, the engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, reported to the Whakatane County Council yesterday. Work has also been carried out in the gorge of spreading about 500 cubic yards of river shingle on bare patches.

Archery Club? There have been suggestions made by some people at Whakatane lately that an archery club should be formed in the town. This sounds like a good scheme but the trouble is nobody seems to know much about the sport or how to get started. The game is very strong in Gisborne and Opotiki and it might be possible to get some assistance from those two centres to start forming a club at Whakatane.

Heavy Surf At Ohope Although there . has been no stormy weather over the Eastern Bay of Plenty in the last few weeks seas along the coast have been particularly rough. The surf around Whakatane during the week-end was no exception and was the roughest experienced for some time. At Ohope Beach bathers found swimming difficult but the Whakatane Surf Club kept a strong patrol posted while there were people in the water. The Councillor Was Sleepy It was warm inside the Whakatane County Council meeting yesterday and the present discussion was proceeding slowly. It would not have been difficult to drop off to sleep as a number of councillors already knew. The conversation lulled. There came a grunt and all eyes turned to the inert figure, sunk deep in the chair with his head slumped forward, his eyes closed, sound asleep. A ripple of laughter swept through the council. “Fetch the plunket nurse,” someone remarked but it was not necessary. The drawsy councillor awoke with a cheerful grin. The discussion on saleyards continued.

Shooting Filmed Cameramen of the National Film Unit filmed the North Island Clay Bird Championships conducted by the Whakatane Club at Paroa on Saturday. Shots were taken of many of the shooters and also of the presentation of the prizes.

Spread Of Weeds Yesterday’s meeting of the Bay of Plenty Sub-Province executive of Federated Farmers (Auckland Province) adopted a remit calling official attention to the spread of weeds by travelling stock. It was pointed out that stock yards and holding paddocks are always full of weeds, and it is to be suggested to the appropriate authorities that steps be taken to have such places cleaned up. You Never Know “When travelling along the road you never know when you might stop for a while,” Cr A. F. MeGougan, was telling the Whakatane County Council during a discussion at yesterday’s meeting. Cr D. C. Butler interjected: I thought you had got past that stage, Cr McGougan. “Yes, but I don’t mean what you are thinking, Cr Butler,” Cr McGougan returned, amid the laughter from other councillors.

Glading For Australia A Sydney message states that the New Zealand professional golfer, R. H. Glading, has nominated for the Me William’s wines £2500 tourney to be played at the Australian Club, commencing on March 31. He visited Australia last year as an amateur and finished eighth in the Australian Open at Melbourne. He may also play in other tourneys while in Australia.
