ABATTOIR WANTED TO SUPPLY MEAT FOR WHAKATANE
That the standard of meat available at Whakatane could be improved if there were a municipal abattoir supplying the town was suggested in a letter from the Whakatane Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party to the Borough Council on Monday night. The letter stated that such an abbattoir would ensure the consumer graded meat, which could be retailed only as graded meat. “The borough is, we understand,” it continued,, “to take a poll on water loan proposals and we suggest that an abattoir proposal be submitted at the same time to ratepayers.” Required By Law
Agreeing that a municipal abattoir was wanted for the town, in fact it was required by law as the population was over 2000, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, pointed out that the borough council had a scheme well under way just before the war. When building restrictions were introduced the controller refused to allow any materials to be used to construct the abattoir.
, “We tried again two years ago fcut again we were refused,” he added.
A site had been selected, Mr Barry said in reply to a question. A small pjece of land, just over the main Whakatane bridge on the northern bank of the river towards the board mills,s was the site decided upon.
Speaking on the building itself Cr W. Sullivan said he did not think there was much hope of the council getting a permit at the present time.
Because of the necessity of an abattoir it was decided to apply to the building controller again for a permit, pointing out that Whakatane was required bv law to have its own municipal abattoir.
