Police Force To Be Strengthened At Whakatane
Efforts of the Whakatane Borough Council in the past to have the police force at Whakatane strengthened appear to have at last borne fruit, according to a letter received from the Commissioner of Police, in Wellington, Mr J. Cummings, by the council on Monday night. “The authorised strength of police personnel at Whakatane is one sergeant and two constables,” Mr Cummings stated in his letter. “When a house becomes available I propose to increase the strength by one constable.”
Satisfaction was expressed by councillors over the arrangement. However, the position of housing today made it appear that it would be sometime yet before the extra constable would be appointed.
Long Time Yet It appears that there is a possibility of a sergeant and three constables being stationed at Whakatane when a house becomes available, said the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry. “If that is the case then it will be a long time before we have a third constable,” he added.
