Main Whakatane Bridge Causes Council Concern

Dissatisfaction and concern with "the main bridge over the Whakatane River to the town was expressed at Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council by Cr ft. T. Morpeth.

He said it was in a very poor state and parts of it needed to be repaired urgently. “It has been badly knocked -around and it is a wonder to me there have not been any worse accidents, there before now,” he added.

Agreeing with Cr Morpeth about the state of the bridge, Cr Sullivan said he did not think a new bridge would be constructed for a long time yet. Cr H. G. Warren said he had been 'told the bridge had been condemned over 15 years ago. It was" decided to write to the Works Department requesting that immediate repairs and improvements be done to the bridge.
