Need For Aerodrome At Whakatane Stressed By Aviator
The urgent need for an aerodrome at Whakatane was stressed by> Mr Oscar Garden in an address to the Whakatane Rotary Club on Tuesday night. There was not a good fast transport service out of the. district and for this reason alone he thought an aerodrome was essential. Mr Garden was one of the pioneers of flying in New Zealand and has flown for several years in other countries. When Tasman Airways . was established he joined the flight staff and served there for about seven years. The building of a drome requires a lot of thought as today a first grade one costs near the million pound mark. In the past it was pos- , sible, Mr Garden said,; to join a couple of paddocks by breaking down the fences but now the re- , gulations were very strict. “However, a town the size of Whakatane should be served by air service,” he added. “It could be a feeder service from a main line, but '• I do think it is necessary and every effort should be made to have an aerodrome established here.”
