“Waioeka Jack’s” Son Wins Memorial Cup
For the first time in its history, the Waioeka Jack Memorial Cup, coveted annual competition trophy of the Opotiki Rod and Gun Club, has been won by a member of the family of the man it was presented to commemorate. J. A. Parkinson, this year’s winner, is a son of the original “Waioeka Jack” Parkinson, who was a foundation member of the club and once recognised as one of the North Island’s outstanding shooters at the traps. The cup was not won easily on this occasion, as two others tied with the possible of 10 birds, and it was only on the shoot-off that Parkinson collected.
President of the Club, Mr Stan Chatfield called upon Mr _ Walter Semmens, grandfather of Bay of Plenty shooters, to make the presentation on behalf of the donors. Mrs Waioeka Jack Parkinson stood beside her son as v he received the handsome silver cup and responded to the congratulations. Another outstanding feature of that day at Victoria Park, Opotiki, was Mr Semmens’s win in the “Gimcrack”, the final event of the day. The veteran, who has passed his three score and ten, cracked his last bird off the 24 yards mark to gain a possible of 7.
