Starting’ Gate For Athletes -
Though American coaches are enthusiastic about using a starting gate for athletic events, British officials are against its introduction. The American view is that the starting gate would eliminate false starts.* '
The secretary, of the British Athletic Association, Mr Jack Crump, said: “It would be useless to adopt the gate for some meetings and not for others. It would be unfair to. expect an athlete to keep changing his method of starting. The introduction of the gate would depend on its universal adoption.” Mr Crump says that the international standard of starting' improved in recent years. False starts could be cut to a minimum if coaches instilled in youngsters the need for patience. Mr Crump added that unless electrical timing was universally adopted—this would bevery expensive—timekeepers would have great difficulty when the starting gate was being used.
