The competition for the Smith Stars on Saturday at the Whakatane Bowling Club’s greens, was probably one of the most closely contested and even games of the season. With both sides playing good, bowls the points were close right through the game, until at the twentieth end the score board read', 24 all. The final end commenced with both sides drawing fairly close but it was the bowl played by Smoljan’s No 2 which then dominated the picture, this being a toucher, lying right on top of the jack. Dixon’s' No. 2 and No. 3 both tried to remove it without success. Dixon’s, first bowl, played on the back hand,) missed and Smoljan then played a v block with his last bowl. Dixon’s last bowl, played in the forehand, was a perfect shot, with correct green and pace he tapped the shot" bowl, making the jack spring veryslightly and so lay two shots to win, 26—24. Results:— R. F. Smith Stars: Wilson (2), Luxton, Dixon (challengers) 26 beat Thompson, Coates, Pearson, Smoljan. (holders) 24. Walter Smith Buttons: Cockerell, Spong (holders) 27 beat Johnson, Good (challengers) 10. Wilson’s Single Badge: Good (holder) 19 beat Spong (challenger) 18.
