MANY UNCLAIMED ARTICLES HELD AT POLICE STATION
Now awaiting to be claimed at the Whakatane police 4 station is a motley collection of articles that have been found in and around Whakatane during the past twelve months. While most of these unclaimed goods have little or no value, there are one or two that would bring a good price in any auction sale.
There is probably more clothing cluttering the station cupboards than anything else. Wearing apparel belonging to both men and women is there, although how some of the articles could have been lost (considering where they are worn) is a matter for disturbing speculation. Nearly all the clothing is now valueless. If not claimed it will be destroyed.
The other articles the police intend to dispose of by auction sale or return to the finders. There are bicycles, watches and a purse containing a quantity of money, which are probably the most valuable. One of the time pieces, a wristlet watch of very good make, was found and handed to the Beacon. It was kept for about' three weeks before being handed to the police. Before any of these articles can be claimed the person doing so is required to give a good description. So far few people have come forward. In cases where anything of value remains unclaimed the police are inclined to consider there is something not quite “above board” about it.
