GRAND WEEK-END FOR 53 CHILDREN FROM WHAKATANE
Fifty-three Whakatane children, members of the Young New . Zealanders’ Club’s “Sunbeams” concert party heard here towards ( the end of last year, are heading for a grand week-end at Auckland when they leave at 1 p.m. Friday as guests of Kerridge-Odeon Theatres. They will get to Auckland between 8.30 and 9 p.m., in charge of Mr A. R. Chapman, and will be welcomed at supper at the Majestic Theatre, Auckland, by members of the Young New Zealanders’ Club. On Saturday they will present their concert to a morning rally of all the Young New Zealanders’ Club members in Auckland and a contingent from Thames. Joan Bridger, local skipping champion, will match her speed against Auckland and Thames representatives, and four strong lads will compete in a .tug-o’-war. Profits go to child welfare work. Following an afternoon’s sightseeing, including the zoo, the Whakatane party will put 'on a halfhour “Sunbeam Session”, which Mr Jack White, Majestic manager is to arrange at IZB. Sunday morning the children will be guests of Mr R. J. Kerridge at his home. They will leave at midday on the return trip. All details, from the special bus to the first class hotel accommodation, even the “car-sick” tablets, have been arranged by Mr Chapman.
