Ohope Institute’s First Birthday

The Ohope Women’s Institute’s first birthday took the form of a garden party at the residence of Mrs E. L. Stevenson, Ohope, on Thursday. The weather was ideal and’the garden made a fine setting, with shady trees and the lily pond, for such a day. There were a number of visitors from various sister institutes, and after a speech of welcome by Mrs R. M. Sorenson, president, each visiting president was presented with a shoulder spray. Nmerous competitions ' and games formed most of the afternoon’s entertainment. Highlight of the afternoon tea was the birthday cake, the one candle being lit by Mrs Sorenson, blown out by Mrs H. M. Carter, Edgecumbe, and the cake being cut by Mrs N. Ducker, Thornton, both visiting presidents. A vote of thanks to Mrs Stevenson for the use of her home was extended by Mrs Sorenson. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the afternoon.

Competition results:— Guessing peas: Mrs Fennell. Paper elephant: Mrs E. Gardiner. Crazy golf: Mrs Fennell. Nature study: Three wise owls, Edgecumbe. Treasure hunt: Mrs T. Roberts. Vases: Mrs O. Dixon. D’oyley: Mrs White.
