New Step In Polish Cultural Drive

A Central Committee for Cultural Questions has been set up in Warsaw, composed of representatives of" the trade unions, the Peasant SelfAid League, youth unions, worl*ers’ and peasants’ universities, the Teachers’ Union and other social organisations, and the Ministers of Education and, of Culture and Art. This cultural committee’s task is to co-ordinate and improve the work of all existing cultural and educational organisations. The first meeting in Warsaw, held under the chairmanship of Premier Jozef Cyrankiewics, approved financial and budgetary plans to aid the cultural drive, the fusion of workers’ and Peasants’ universities, the struggle against illiteracy, new methods of popularising books, theatres, films and plays. A Central school for 150 cultural and educational workers will be organised soon.
