Mr and Mrs A. Dowell leave Whakatane on Wednesday on a holiday visit to the South Island. Miss J. Fitzgerald, receptionist at | the Commercial Hotel, has returned after a prolonged visit to Ashburton. Mr E. Bryenton, who has been head barman at the Commercial Hotel for the past ten years, retired on. Friday. Miss M. Egan, Messrs G. L. Washer, B. J. Durney and F. Cockerell were elected to membership of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce on Thursday night.
