MR M. LENNIE TAKES VACANT COUNCIL SEAT

Although 1993 people are entitled to vote at municipal elections at Whakatane only 271 cast votes in the by-election held on Wednesday to elect a new member to the Borough Council. Of the two candidates, Mr Charles Magnus Lennie was successful in defeating Mr Robert Riddell. Mr Lennie gained a clear majority, polling 158 votes to 113. In the last municipal election held in 1947, both these candidates stood but were unsuccessful. At that time Mr Lennie polled 385 votes and Mr Riddell 185. The 271 who voted on Wednesday are only about 13.5 per cent of the total 1993. Not an encouraging sign of the civic pride of Whakatane’s citizens. As could be expected, those who controlled the polling booths on Wednesday had a very quiet time. Since the 1947 election the Whakatane roll has increased by 130.
