Bay Of Plenty Beats Thames Valley In the representative tennis match held at Paeroa between Bay of Plenty and Thames Valley the Bay. players were successful, winning 14 matches to 7, 3 of the matches being unfinished. Local members of the team were I. Wylds, P. Bryers and Miss M. Hall from the Whakatane club and R. Lees from the Rangitaiki club. In the top men’s single Wylds played Very well in patches, being prone to spells of errors. The remarkable feature of his match was markable feature of this match was tically forlorn score positions. In the first set his opponent Clemence, from Te Aroha led 5—2, only to see Wylds take ! four games in a row to win the set. In the second set Clemence established a lead of s—o, but once again Wylds crept up, taking six successive games and the match. R. Lees played extremely steady tennis to score a comfortable win over Thompson. This match was remarkable for the very long rallies, but Lees’ consistence and clever placements were too' much for his opponent. The match between P. Bryers and E. Law had little to recommend it except another recovery frpm a 5love down position by Law in the second set. The first and third sets went to Bryers fairly comfortably. Miss M. .Hall started shakily against her opponent but her steadiness and speed about the court were dominating factors in the second and third sets. Her opponent, Mrs Pentecost, did not appear fit enough for 3 set matches. In the top men’s doubles Clenience and Horn hit very hard and very consistently, to defeat Wylds and Lees in two sets. The latter pair have yet to play more together to reach the perfect understanding existing between the Lees brothers. ‘ The Paeroa courts * were quite perfect being very flat and extremely, hard and fast. One very bad feature, however, is the fact that the courts face practically due east and west, the sun proving a great handicap when playing, from the western end.
