SIR PETER BUCK CANNOT RETURN TO N.Z. JUST YET
“Much as I would like to I cannot come back to live in New Zealand just yet,” said Sir Peter Buck, in an interview at Ruatoki on Friday. “There are many reasons why I cannot, the chief being my work, which is not in this country.” Sir Peter was referring to an invitation, which had been made by Mr A. O. Stewart, Whakatane, during the course of a speech.
Mr Stewart had said that Sir Peter had now spent a long time among the Pakeha. Could he not now return to New Zealand and give the Maori the benefit of all his knowledge? . “I cannot come back,” Sir Peter said. “I have a job to do, orte that I must carry on. Besides this I have other responsibilities. I am not only Director of the Bishop Museum at Honolulu, but also a trustee. “This position will stop me, if nothing else, as I must remain until I retire.”
