Have Local Body Conferences Any Real Value?
Do local body conferences really do any good? That question was posed by Mr J. A. Caulfield when the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board yesterday authorised its chairman, Mr J. Mullins, secretary, Mr F. Prideaux, and the Medical Superintendent, Dr E. T. Dawson, to attend the Hospital Board’s conference at Wellington on May 4 and 5 next. He thought it possible the Department might not choose to take conference resolutions seriously enough. Messrs Mullins, A. F. McGougan, L. Buddie and C. A. Suckling all agreed that the conference had definite value/ and should be attended. Mr Buddie’s point was that, unless local bodies showed a united front against any such move, control might be filched from them and they rhight find themselves with a standing similar only to a school Committee.
Mr Suckling said the value of a conference could not be assessed solely on the effectiveness of the resolutions passed. There was definite advantage in the mixing together and exchange of ideas amongst delegates.
