Annual Picnic Held At Lake Rotom& On Saturday the Whakatane Rowing Club held their first annual picnic at Lake Rotoma. Between 40 and 50 members and friends journeyed up by car and bus to spend a pleasant day rowing, swimming and eating. In spite of the weather looking very doubtful on leaving towfr it remained fine and warm at the lakes. A feature of the day were the ladies who were taken out in the skiffs for a row. If the club started a ladies club there is no doubt they would be sure of some members now. Trial fours were held. Following are the results:— No. 1 W. Stuart, E. Petty, K. O’Rourke, A. Atkinson; No. 2 W. Sandham, C. Ranby, G. Moore, D. Wells; No. 3 B. Cutler, S. Shapley, B. Burt, T. Stewart; No. 4 D. McCarthy, E. Hunt, M. Brown, P. Bowering; No. 5 R. King, G. Goodall, M. Whittaker, L. Goodall. First heat: Stuart’s crew beat Sandham’s by k length. Second heat: McCarthy’s crew beat Cutler’s by J length. Semi-final: King’s crew beat Stuart’s by a canvas. Final: McCarthy’s crew beat King’s by one length. Tug-o-war: Shops, Odds and Others. This was won by the. Odds, comprising S. Cave, Bowering, Whittaker, Ranby and T. Stewart. On Friday Whakatane crews will travel to Mercer to compete in the Auckland rowing championships.
