BOROUGH COUNCIL OBJECTION TO A PROPOSED QUARRY

Ail objection to the proposal !Of the Whakatane Harbour .Board to establish a quarrynear the Heads, Whakatane, is ' to be lodged by the Whakatane j 'Borough Council, it was decided at Monday night’s meeting. The council considered there -was no need to have a quarry in that position in the borough. If the harbour board has a quarry there, it is going to be a constant source of danger to the electrical sub-station, which is near the proposed site, said the borough electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght. It would only require one stray rock from a blast to get into the works, and there would be a complete breakdown. The quarry would be a constant source of danger to nearby houses, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, remarked.

“Also, I think it is too near the children’s playground,” he added. “There appear to be quite a number of quarries along the hill here above the town. If something is not done to stop them we will soon find the whole hillside scarred,” declared the deputy mayor, Mr C. S. Armstrong. Other councillors agreed and it was decided that objection be made immediately.
