Finest Knitters In The World Said To Be British Women

It is claimed that British women are the world’s finest knitters, and today there are more at work with the needles than at any time in history. The articles which many of them make are among the most eagerly sought after dollar-earners in the nation’s export drive. In our grandmother’s day knitted articles were purely utilitarian, laying no claim to fashion, but now they are well to the fore in the dress world, as is proved by the success which attends Women’s Home Industries.

Knitting is an old art. It is said that Edward IV was the first English King to wear knitted garments. Princess Mary, Henry VIII’s sister, had knitted hose, and both Henry VIII and Elizabeth had knitted silk stockings. Charles I wore a knitted vest on the day of his execution, and Charles II is reputed to have worn the boot hose now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
