The Income Tax Department Will Have It's Little Joke
A Christchurch man is intrigued at the vagaries of officialdom as revealed in an envelope he received from the Land and Income Tax Department. The envelope bore the familiar inscription, “Confidential,” and “On land and income tax department business only,” and it contained, according to the recipient, “an income tax assessment which rocked me to the foundations.” The man was undoubtedly cogitating on the blow incorporated in the assessment when, in turning the envelope over, he noticed a message of a very different character stamped on the back. The message, in flowery type, stated simply: “Compliments of the season.” The message could conceivably have been added to the envelope in transit, but the recipient would still like to think that it really was a gesture on the part of the Land and Income Tax Department.
