Touching Gratitude
“I ain’t talked to people like this afore. I ain’t ever likely to again. I can’t write and say thank you, because I am an old man and me ’ands shake too much. But I can tell you all and you can write for me. God bless these people in New Zealand. They .are our own folks. I only ’opes the day comes when we can do something back and show ’em that when we says ‘Thank you’ we means it!” These are the actual words used by an 84-year-old resident of Canterbury, England, when he tried to express his feelings on receipt, from the hands of a member of the New Zealand Parliamentary delegation, of a food parcel sent from this country through the Ministry of Food distribution centre.
