Life And Songs Of Stephen Foster

One name which stands out in the musical world of Southern tunes dnd “darky” melodies is that of Stephen Foster. Composer of such and loved favourites as “Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair,” “Beautiful Dreamer,” “My Old Kentucky Home,” “Old Black Joe,” and “Camptown Races,” many of Foster’s works were attributed to contemporary composers. He wrote more than 200 songs and, it is said, for many of these he accepted printed copies of his compositions in lieu of royalties. Foster died in comparative poverty and in tragic circumstances in 1864 at the age or 38.
