Whakatane Lose In Cup Match

A dropped catch when A. Badeley the Opotiki captain, had reached double figures put paid to Wh.akatane’s bid in the elimination match for the Attrill Cup at Edgecumbe on Saturday. Badeley by good defensive batting punctuated by spec-: tacular hitting went on to reach 124 retired. Three Opotiki wickets were down for 52 when S. Warren joined his captain. Warren who had taken 5 Whakatane wickets for 37 runs off 18 overs, scored 25 retired in two hours of patient batting, the partnership adding 128 runs and putting the result beyond doubt. As a result ' the following Opotiki players more or less “went for, a hit” to finish with 9 down for 192 and a victory ,on the first innings. The home bowling was steady, but lacked the necessary sting to break up the Badeley-Warren partnership and a number of lofted shots fell safely between fieldsmen. On the whole, the fielding of both sides was good without being spectacular, with S. Shapley and W. McCready prominent in the outfield. For Whakatane J. Rive.ttj after an. early “life” played a splendid knock for top score of 74, which included 9 fours, 2 sixes and a lost ball. Rivett’s last , knock on the Edgecumbe ground registered .131 and a swim by K. Simpson to retrieve another Rivett six from the river! 1 * Irwin Campbell batted, in his usual solid manner for 25'and: was then splendidly caught by Vanstone, who also collected, J. Rivett’s wicket by taking a grand catch close fin when the batsman tried to off-drive Warren.. K. Tunnicliffe 18 and L. Thurlow 11 .were the only other, home batsmen to reach double figures; Warren, Opotiki’s main bowler, being the reason. Though beaten the home* side acquitted a ?;ij;sblf well. Actually, there was little between the teams and, with a narrow defeat by Rotorua the previous week, Whakatane has the makings of d good side.
