Broadcasting Of Fertilisers Is A Wasteful Practise
The practise of broadcasting fertilisers is wasteful as much of the food does ..not come within root range of the crop, states a leaflet issued by the Chemists’ Branch of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture. The leaflet advises the setting of fertiliser by seed drills at a depth of lim-to 3in below the actual seed to be sown, using an ounce or two per yard. With large growing plants that are spaced, such as tomatoes, cabbages and potatoes, a hole a foot in diameter and several inches deep can be made and a small handful of fertiliser scattered in the hole before filling in and planting above the fertiliser. Fertilisers for potatoes should be slightly below and in a ring about the tuber rather than directly beneath it.
