Xmas Tragedy: Wife Boils Her Husband 's Beer
At least one unfortunate in Christchurch had a gloomy Christmas. Oh Christmas Eve, he bought a dozen bottles of beer and, as the weather was hot and he liked his beer cool, he placed them in the copper, filling it u,p with cold water. Having made a round of visits during the evening, he slept in on Christmas morning. He was wakened by his wife, who was panic stricken over events in the washhouse. She had decided to do some washing and had lit the fire under the copper. When the water heated, 12 submarine explosions occurred as the caps of the bottles were blown off. A vast volume of froth rose to the top of the water, and trickled down the sides of the copper.
