Staff On The Prowl
Considerable excitement was caused at Edgecumbe at the weekend by a four-pointer stag which appeared first of all near the substation at Edgecumbe, then jumped into a maize paddock, where it remained for about an hour until frightened by a gang of Maoris who got on its track just ahead of a pakeha resident with a gun. It jumped onto the railway line and was last seen heading for Awakeri. Since there are known to be deer in the hills at the back of Awakeri Springs it is thought that is where it came from in the first place.
Youth (to his charming dinner -partner): “Do you know I asked that old fool over there didn’t he ■ think the lady in the blue dress was a perfect old gargoyle, and he turn- - ed out to be her husband.” She: “How delightful—what did - dad say then?”
