Sealing Of Ohope Road
Those who used the road to Ohope bad something to say about the state it was in. For the amount of traffic that used the road and the size of the settlement of Ohope, one Waikato man could not understand why the road had not been sealed long before now. _The dust encountered while travelling to the’ beach was bad enough, but that on the beach road was 10 times worse.
He said he wondered how Ohope
residents managed to keep their houses and washing clean. Fine Beach Lacks Amenities Discussing the facilities at Ohope this man said that for such a popular resort they were poor. He thought that lawns and better spots for picnic parties could be created and more and improved changing and shower facilities for bathers.
Despite this criticism of - Ohope he had this to say about the beach: “I think it is the finest beach I have ever been to in New; Zealand. It’s long stretch of white sand with' those rolling breakers is a sight. I shall not forget.” Other visitors had more complimentary remarks to make of the beach and the town. Whakatane was described by one as a “veritable haven of restfulness” while a business man from Wellington said he would like to retire here. Another remarked that if there was a marine parade on the river bank past the business area to the Heads, it would be the prettiest little town in I he North Island. (He was a South Islander).
