NIGERIAN PEN-FRIEND ON THE SCROUNGE A novel request from a penfriend has been receieved by a Christchurch girl from a youth in Lagos, Nigeria. 1 After stating his age and; height the writer-adds: “I hope you will celebrate your birthday on October 12, 1948. Please, when during your birthday send me these things as presents: camera, sweater, hand watch and a fountain pen because I left many letters unanswered, because I like a girl penpal very much.” After outlining some of the features of Lagos, 'the writer con- V eludes: “Waiting to receive your parcel containing camera, sweater, hand watch and fountain pen as quickly as you receive this letter.” The envelope addresed to the girl is marked at the top “Pay an urgent reply.” - ! / . “Had he asked me for a sweater only I might have managed to send one. I am only a working girl, and would like a camera, fountain pen, and hand watch myself,” the girl stated. “Needless to say, I will discontinue the correspondence.”
