Whakatane Leads The Way First marlin to be caught off Russell this season was hooked by Mr E. B. Hay, of Whakatane, who was a member of a holiday launch party there. The fish, measuring between 7 and 8 feet long, weighed approximately 1701 b. v Two others, larger ones, were caught the same day. They were all in excellent health, and apart from one pony whi6h had been kicked the rest of the animals had stood up to the journey well. The party will ride to Ngongotaha where they will entrain for theirhomes in the Waikato. Cheaper Cigarettes There is a strong possibility that several more brands of imported cigarettes will be reduced in price late this month or in February. Tobacconists have been advised to buy only their immediate requirements of slow-selling imported . brands. The tobacco trade council consider-* ed reducing prices some months ago, but action was deferred at the request of retailers, who wanted the Christmas period to help them get rid of their stocks. .
