Difficulties In Compiling Maori Electoral Rolls
It is expected that the first copies of the new Maori electoral roll will be available at Rotorua shortly, said the Registrar of the Waiariki Maori Land Court, Mr J. J. Dillon, recently. The roll is at present being compiled at Wellington. A copy will be accessible to persons concerned for additions and amendments, as many have become eligible for enrolment since the last general election. Then, a portion of the ballot paper issued to Maoris was filled in by the voter and torn off. This contained particulars such as name and tribe for inclusion in the roll. Preparation has not been without some difficulties. This has been largely due to the fact that the Maoris' are listed under first names, following the Maori custom, in that respect. Many persons of the one name are listed together, and individuality is lost. It/ is estimated that between 6000 and 7000 names are contained in the roll.-
