New System Of F.M. Broadcasting “Just A Racket”?
& “Frequency modulation is just a racket,” Mr B. J. Edwards, English radio and television expert, told an audience of 40 radio engineers and technicians recently. Mr Edwards said the Americans were “selling and claiming that it gave higher, quality reproduction. He added: “But so does A.M. (amplitude modulation), if you use a wide band-width as .you have to in F.M. and noise limiters.” (Amplitude modulation is the system in use in New Zealand). “There are fields for both,” Mr Edwards said. “It is not a matter of F.M. replacing ,A.M. It is F.M. and A.M. together arid the broadcast field is not the right one for F.M.” He was asked if he thought F.M. would supplant A.M. in Britain. Applause greeted his reply, “Over my dead body.”
