MAORI FARMERS
Payment For Bobby Calves The Department of Maori Affairs .-at Rotorua was recently approached for information on the practice , followed in the payment of Maotri farmers marketing bobby oalves as v it affected areas in the Bay of Plenty.. The move was made by ■ the Bay of Plenty Sub-Province Federated Farmers (Auckland Province). ( The Registrar for the department, Mr J. J. Dillon replied that for convenience and to give adequate control of the sale of calves, the proceeds from calves disposed of should be - forwarded to his office. In the past, he said, it was found that the ready money obtainable -from such calves was too much of a temptation to some Maori farmer* who preferred” the proceeds f rom heifer calves to the trouble of raising them for future herd replacements. Adjustments were made for the correct sales through the accounts of the various farmers connected with the department. .The view was expressed at a Bay .of Plenty Sub-Previncial meeting in Tauranga that this position was •unsatisfactory and the Maori farmer should receive direct payment. Further action is to be taken in this <■ direction.
